Cynicism

It "snowed" today in DC. I tried not to be too cynical towards the people who were freaking out about it though. I knew it was going to be tough though when I woke up this morning, saw a few flakes of snow floating in the air, and then heard on the radio that some schools in Virginia were going to be closing early today to to the snow (in my entire school career the only times I remember missing school due to snow was when there was over a foot of snow on the ground). Then, after I got to work I learned that several of my co-workers (including my supervisor) had a pretty tough time getting to work this morning due to the "snow," and thus they arrived a few hours late. I still couldn't actually see any visible snow accumulated on the ground at this time, so I was honestly pretty perplexed as to why this would have caused them to be late, but nonetheless, I was able to bite my tongue and curb my cynicism. Later in the evening, as the snow slowly began to "accumulate," (in SOME places, there must have been 1/4 - 1/2 an inch of snow) I was amazed by how slowly some people seemed to be driving, and how nobody seemed to know how to properly clear their car windshield of snow.

So, in summary, I knew that people in DC don't generally take well to "snow," but even so I was still rather surprised by the response to even this seemingly minor "snow." That is all.

In other news, today was my second day of working at the Alliance to Save Energy, and I think I am going to like it there. I still don't know exactly what I will be doing there, but I think it will be all-around a good thing for me.

Dustin,
here in L.A. it's been 60-65 degrees and people are complaining about how "freezing" it is outside. Honestly, the buildings at school all have the heat turned on! Meanwhile, I'm still in shorts and t-shirt. I can't imagine what would happen to the city if it snowed..mayhem would ensue!

It snowed once when I worked in Texas, close to a half inch. They almost had to shut the plant down because so few people could make it to work.

well, it was snowing like a banshee here today. I rode the bus home and it was running late but only because there is a Ziggy Marley concert in town and the buses were packed at 4pm. A guy who was very obviously a tourist got on the bus at the Vail Transportation Center and after struggling with his skis, poles, pack, money, etc. asked the driver, a very young, cheerful Aussie woman, quite arrogantly if she as going to be able to drive the bus, without crashing, and how long has she been driving? She answered cheerily that she has been driving for a month! And off she went... happy as could be... he went on to talk loudly on his phone that he was on a bus with a woman driver who has only been driving a month... We got home safely. The only sad part was that none of us on the bus were going to the concert. You don't miss driving a bus do you?....

To mom, yes, I actually do miss driving the bus, but not enough to feel like I need to move back to be a bus driver again or anything. I hope that everyone sent hateful vibes towards that man for the duration of the bus ride. I know I would have...

growing up in vail has definetly made us out to be some serious snow snobs. remember when we lived in new york and they would pretty much cancel school if snow was in the forcast? pretty cool.

Snow snobs indeed. With all the ice storms this week thru the midwest this morning there was a feature on the Today show about Ice Driving School in Steamboat, of which you and Raissa are both alums. The Today Show piece made it seem like what you learn in a day at Ice Driving School could be huge. I just thought it was a fun day of learning to control and slide a bit better. Guess we take our exposure to those kind of driving conditions for granted.
